Whether you’re getting ready for your first ride with RED AXS or trying to adjust your setup after many miles of use, keep these tips handy for troubleshooting, tuning, and maintaining your RED AXS bike.

BE RIDE READY

We all have different pre-ride routines, but we recommend any AXS rider gets into the habit of checking a few simple things before every ride to ensure your RED AXS bike is primed and ready to roll.

CHECK THE AXS APP

The AXS App is your one-stop shop for determining if your bike is ready to ride. Simply open the app to view your bike’s status. If you see green, you’re good to go. If not, tap on your bike card to view each component’s status. The solution will be as simple as swapping a battery or updating firmware.

CHECK YOUR AXS BATTERIES

Just as you may need a morning coffee before you hop on the bike, your AXS batteries may need a little juice before a big ride. Check your derailleur battery status, charge if needed, and ride without worry. Plus, you can easily swap batteries between front and rear derailleurs mid-ride should one go flat.

CHECK YOUR SHIFTER BATTERIES

The LED on the inside of your shift paddles lights up every time you shift to indicate the battery status of your shifters. Green means you’re good to go, while red means it’s time to replace the battery. The coin cell battery inside each of your shifters lasts up to two years, and thankfully they’re easy to swap when the time comes. Just roll back your hood cover and use a quarter or large coin to open the battery hatch by turning counterclockwise. With the new battery installed, make sure to align the arrows when carefully closing the hatch to avoid crushing the battery contacts. We recommend carrying a spare CR2032 battery in your flat kit in case of emergency.

CHECK YOUR BIKE COMPUTER

If any of your derailleur or shifter batteries are low, you’ll receive a notification right on your Karoo or ANT+ bike computer screen.

TECH TIP: If your batteries are all green but your bike stops shifting, your AXS system may need to be re-paired. Pairing your AXS components together only takes a few minutes and is necessary for the proper communication between your shifters and derailleurs to actuate shift commands. Pairing is also required whenever you add a new component, and it allows your bike status to be viewable in the AXS App and your Hammerhead Karoo.

STEP 1: USE THE SETUP TOOL

Proper positioning of your front derailleur is essential for optimal front shifting, and the new setup tool allows anyone to easily achieve the necessary alignment. If your shifting is subpar, start by checking your mounting position and using a setup tool to adjust it as needed.

There are two different setup tools, red or green, depending on your large chainring size. Be sure to choose the correct part number for your setup. The red 46T-50T: 00.7618.179.000, and the green 52T-56T: 00.7618.181.000

TECH TIP: Auto trim allows the front derailleur to know where the rear derailleur is on the cassette to trim accordingly and eliminate rub. To ensure proper setup, shift the rear derailleur into the largest cog, which will move the front derailleur to the inboard trim position for setup or adjustment.

STEP 2: USE SUPPORT WEDGES

When upshifting to the big ring, there’s a tiny wedge that plays a big role in increasing the stability of your front shifts and preventing chain drops. If your front derailleur is braze-on mounted, check that one of three different sized wedges is installed to provide the additional and crucial support needed to enhance your shifting.

STEP 3: ADJUST LIMIT SCREWS

Getting the fastest and most secure front shifting requires careful fine tuning of the front derailleur's limits. Adjust the high limit screw, marked with H, if your chain drops outboard. Adjust the low limit screw, marked with L, if your chain drops inboard.

CHECK CHAIN LENGTH

Correct chain length is critical for positioning the upper pulley wheel to produce crisp, secure shifts. When sizing your chain, wrap it around the large chainring and largest cassette cog with the flat edge facing away from the chainring and cassette. For 2x systems, add one inner link and one outer link where the chain starts to overlap. For 1x, add two inner links and two outer links where the chain starts to overlap. We like to measure twice and cut the chain once.

CHECK CHAIN GAP

To make your shifting quicker and more responsive, make sure that your chain gap is set correctly using the gauge that came with your drivetrain. Shift the rear derailleur to the largest cog and place the gauge onto the upper pulley. Turn the B-Adjust screw until the appropriate gap between the upper pulley and the tallest teeth of the largest cog is attained.

MICROADJUST

If you hear the rear derailleur hesitating between gears or rasping at specific points on the cassette, use MicroAdjust to dial in your derailleur’s position in 0.25 mm increments. MicroAdjust is available in the AXS App within your bike’s Drivetrain Settings, or you can press and hold your shifter’s AXS button while pressing the shift paddle inward. Use the left shifter to adjust the derailleur inboard and improve shifting to an inboard cog, and the right shifter to adjust the derailleur outboard and improve shifting to an outboard cog.

ADJUST LIMIT SCREWS

When your limits are set correctly, your chain will never go into the spokes or fall into the frame. Start by shifting the rear derailleur into the largest cog and adjust the low limit screw (L) so that it lightly contacts the inner link of the rear derailleur. Then shift outboard to the smallest cog and adjust the high limit screw (H) until it lightly touches the inner link of the rear derailleur. This will keep the derailleur from moving too far inward or too far outward as your shift at each end of the cassette.

KNOW YOUR LED’S

Every time you shift, your derailleur’s LED illuminates green or red. This primarily indicates battery status, but what about when it blinks green and red? This alternating of colors occurs during a rejected shift. If you attempt to enter a locked out chainring/cog combination that would lead to cross chaining, or when you try to shift while the temperature is below -15 °C, your derailleur will protect itself by politely rejecting your request.

GET THE BEST BRAKING

Whether your brakes are brand-new or they’ve seen their fair share of grit and grime, you’ll want to arm yourself with a few brake best practices.

PAD REPLACEMENT

If you’ve just completed a muddy cyclocross season or descended in the Alps all summer, your brakes may not feel as powerful or consistent as you’d like. It’s time to measure your brake pads and replace them if needed.

CHOOSING PAD COMPOUND

When replacing pads, know that you have options suited to your riding style. Your brakes came with organic pads, which are the quietest and best performing in most conditions. If you ride in all weather and need a heavier duty option, go for sintered. Just be sure to always use new rotors whenever you change pad compounds. And whatever you choose, be absolutely certain to perform the bed-in process before your first ride with new pads and/or rotors to maximize brake power and minimize noise.

AXS BIKE CARE

From packing your bike for a trip, to performing regular maintenance, there are some unique aspects of AXS to keep in mind to keep your bike in tip-top shape.

TRANSPORTATION

When prepping your AXS bike for travel, removing your batteries and inserting the red battery blocks will preserve battery life. If AXS batteries remain installed, movement will wake up your system. Driving with batteries on your bike will make your drivetrain think you’re riding, so don’t let your batteries drain on the way to your destination. For flying, always remove batteries and place them in a carry-on as a safety precaution recommended by airlines.

CLEANING

Your AXS components are waterproof, so don’t be shy about hosing off your bike when it needs a bath. However, be mindful of only using soap and water on your electronic components. Harsh cleaners and degreasers can weaken the materials that make up your components, especially if you soak them. Soaking is never necessary and voids your warranty. When cleaning, it’s best to keep your parts on your bike and only remove your batteries, replacing them with battery blocks to protect the battery contacts.

CHECKING FOR WEAR

Your AXS drivetrain is incredibly durable, but checking for wear each season is still a great habit to form. Replacing your chain on time will prolong the lifespan of both your cassette and your chainrings. Measuring with an approved chain wear indicator only takes a minute and can save your whole drivetrain for many miles to come.

TECH TIP: Only replace your chain when it is worn based on the approved wear indicator’s markings. Waiting until the chain is fully worn will ensure your drivetrain runs smoothly and quietly for as long as possible.
